Recap: Defense in the Spotlight at SXSW 2024

At SXSW 2024 defense innovation was front and center against the backdrop of Austin's vibrant cultural scene. Spearheaded by Capital Factory, this year’s event served as a pivotal platform for discussions, partnerships, and demonstrations within the defense tech sector, showcasing the intersection of technology and national security.

As recent as two years prior, defense-focused activities at SXSW were nearly nonexistent, but against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the looming uncertainty over the DoD's collaboration with Silicon Valley, concerns were palpable.

This year marked a notable shift as the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) inaugurated its Joint Defense Innovation Office at Capital Factory to host AFWERX, NavalX, and other partners.

Joint Defense Innovation Office x Capital Factory

On March 8th, DIU, AFWERX, and NavalX launched a new Joint Defense Innovation workspace at the Capital Factory accelerator in Austin, which underscored the city's growing importance as a center for defense innovation. The collaboration builds tech-sector relationships, and investments, and ensures a coordinated outreach to industry between the defense innovation leaders. This expansion signifies new opportunities for cross-pollination between government agencies, startups, and industry leaders, solidifying Austin's position as a key player in shaping defense technology.

“Catalyzing the DoD’s innovation entities into a community of impact provides an opportunity for greater synergy and impact, from the local to a national level.”

Right People, Time, & Place

Panelists took center stage, with Founders Ethan Thornton from Mach Industries discussing what it’s like to be a start-up in the defense space, where the real work often takes place outside formal settings. Relationships are solidified and collaborations forged over coffee, dinner, or at private events, because when the relevant players are in the room, it can propel the industry forward.

In the midst of this networking frenzy, the importance of having the right people in the same place at the same time cannot be overstated. Attendees are industry leaders, government representatives, investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators—all pivotal players in driving defense innovation. Overall, companies were eager to engage in discussions, learn from each other, and better understand the defense ecosystem - they got a crash course during this year’s Capital Factory events.

Events like SXSW will continue to serve as catalysts for collaboration and innovation - fostering partnerships and driving technological advancements - shaping the future of national security for years to come.
